Mishawaka Common Council approves rate increase for Mishawaka Utilities

Rates will be going up soon for Mishawaka Utilities customers.

The Common Council voted unanimously Monday evening to allow the utility to raise rates by 13.8 percent.

The General Manager says the utility hasn't raised rates for more than 20 years and has to shore up more than $6 million for things like capital improvements.

The utility also needs to have enough cash on hand handle emergencies like Sunday's storm.

"We as a utility have an obligation to make sure that our cash balances are adequate so that we can withstand these types of interruptions and the funds to make sure everyone is back on fast," says General Manager Jim Schrader.

No one spoke in opposition at Monday's meeting.

The rate increase goes into effect December 5th.
