Council approves ordinance to end Elkhart sewer dispute

The Elkhart City Council met Monday evening to hopefully put an end to the city's sewer dispute.

After months of haggling, that's what they did. At least for now.

Mayor Dick Moore agreed to reduce the fee for businesses from 35 percent to 25 percent, next year.

Residents who don't live in the city, but use sewer services will be charged a $35 dollar.

Before the vote Monday, Moore agreed to support this new agreement, but only as it was presented to the Council.

"I will sign the substitute ordinance into law but I will not be bound to do it and make no commitment either way is there are further amendments attached to the ordinance," says Moore.

An amendment was offered to go towards a user rate format, but it didn't pass.

Councilman David Henke says it's a good settlement towards fairness, but it's just a temporary fix since this ordinance is only good through 2014.

The new rates go into effect, January 1st.
