Volunteers prepare an herb garden at the Century Center

Dozens of volunteers worked Tuesday morning to help start phase two of the Green Bridge Growers plan to grow fresh herbs in the Century Center skywalk.  Volunteers from the South Bend Fire Department, Century Center, The Double Tree, and school children carried up bags of fresh organic soil to fill planters.

Co-Founder of Green Bridge Growers, Jan Pilarski, said that many people helped this laboring project move faster than expected.  "Lots of hands on, roll up your sleeves work," Pilarski said, "so we were hauling the dirt in, smoothing it out, laying a nice layer so that we can then move in the plants to grow.

The goal of the project is to create jobs for young people with autism.  The herbs will be sold to local restaurants.  For more information, visit Green Bridge Growers.
