Power outages and debris create health concerns

We have an important reminder from the Elkhart Health Department.  If your home, business or neighborhood suffered damage because of Sunday's storms, be careful when you're picking up debris.

Doctors want to make sure you also don't pick up an illness along the way.  "One of the things we see related to storms is actually concerns about tetanus because not everybody is up to date with their vaccinations and they start picking through rubble or walking in areas where there are nails or other sharp objects and they can get wounds," says Health Officer Dr. Dan Nafziger.

Another concern from the health department is people living without heat.  The elderly and people with health problems should seek shelter if their electricity is out.  Doctors don't want anyone to suffer from hypothermia.
