Car thefts on the rise in South Bend

Motor vehicle thefts are on the rise in South Bend, and police have one recommendation for you to bring the number back down: don't leave your keys in the car.

Captain Phil Trent with the South Bend Police Department says motor vehicle thefts are up at least 18% this year.  He says there is a common thread in many of these cases.  The owner either left the keys in the ignition, or "hidden" in the glove box.

Technology has made it much more difficulty for potential car thieves to "hot-wire" cars in any traditional sense, but that protection is meaningless if they can just turn the keys and drive away.

"Please do not let cars idle, unattended at any time at any place and do not leave an ignition key accessible inside the vehicle," warns Captain Trent.
