The Pocketbook Effect: How Heavy is Your Purse

Alright ladies, be honest, when's the last time you cleaned out your purse?  Or asked yourself "Do I really need everything that's in there?"  Niles-based chiropractor Dr. Lloyd Redington says a heavy handbag isn't just a pain to carry, it can leave you in pain too.  He says symptoms can include lower neck and upper back pain, along with numbing and tingling symptoms of a radiating pain.

"It's like a train junction these nerve routes.  They exit and they come in to a complex junction and then they just branch out down to your spine, your upper spine, and into your arm.  And that gets a lot of compression based on those heavy bags."

Dr. Redington says your purse should not weigh more than 10-15% of your body weight, and he says a crossbody bag is one of the best to carry to prevent pain.  He recommends stretching to take care of your body, and warns that over time carrying heavy bags can lead to arthritis.
