Winter weather causes several slide-offs westbound on bypass

St. Joseph County deputies have been busy this afternoon handling a number of slide-offs on the bypass.

Our crew got stuck in traffic westbound on the bypass near the St. Joseph-Elkhart County line around 3:30. It took more than an hour to get to Elm Road.

"It was something straight out of a movie, like "Final Destination." It was bad," says Randy Losher, who ended up in a ditch on the bypass. "I was going and there was a whiteout and the next thing I know, everyone was just stopped. I swerved and ended up in the ditch," he says.

Kennard Thacker's car was totaled. His wife was taken away by ambulance.

"It was clear, all of a sudden, ice. I had my car in neutral, trying to get off the side of the road and all of a sudden I was rear-ended," says Thacker.

There were dozens of cars in the ditch including two jack-knifed semis between the county line and Elm road.

Traffic was back up for miles and at times, was at a standstill. Drivers we talked to, stayed patient.

"It's a big deal for those folks. Not for me," says driver Michael Sheehan.

Police have said it before and they'll say it again, especially with the bypass, "Slow down!" says Lieutenant Tim Williams. He says also increase your traveling distance so you have time to stop if you need to. "We know around here in Michiana the weather can change in a matter of seconds, and road conditions can do that as well."

On the day before Thanksgiving, folks stranded on the bypass know exactly what blessings they'll be counting over turkey dinner.

"Being alive," says Losher.
