Man charged with OWI after hitting tow truck, injuring St. Joe County officer


A man has been charged and an arrest warrant issued after an incident that sent a St. Joseph County Police officer to the hospital.

The incident happened early Sunday. Police say the officer was responding to an accident in the area of Douglas Road and State Road 23. Prosecutors say 29-year-old Carl Sabinas allegedly hit a tow truck responding to the accident. The officer was standing on the running board of the tow truck was thrown. The officer was taken to the hospital and released.

Sabinas is charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated and Operating a Motor Vehicle With an Alcohol Concentration of .15 or More Grams of Alcohol in the breath. Both charges are Class A Misdemeanors.

Prosecutors say the investigation into the incident and the extent of the officer's injuries is ongoing. If the investigation reveals "serious bodily injury", prosecutors say they may add a higher charge.
