UPDATE: Search continues for suspect who hit officer, led police on chase

Posted:

The search continues for a suspected drug dealer who hit an officer with a vehicle, then led police on a chase to a South Bend apartment complex.

It started with a drug bust Tuesday at a convenience store at State Line Road and M51 in Niles.

The Berrien County Sheriff's Department says they had been investigating a suspected drug dealer for several weeks. During a bust buy at the store, officers say the suspect spotted officers.

"We tried to take him down," said Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey. "As we pulled in, he tried to back up, hit one of my deputies and took off."

The officer suffered severe bruises to his knee and thigh. He was treated and released from the hospital.

Officers started following the suspect across the state line and into South Bend. South Bend Police joined the hunt, getting some help from a bus driver who spotted the suspect vehicle enter the Indian Springs Apartment complex off Portage Road, just south of the Indiana Toll Road.

Officers surrounded an apartment, calling in the South Bend Police SWAT team. After trying to get the suspect to surrender, the SWAT team went in, but the suspect was not inside.

Officers went through the suspect's car looking for clues on how to track him down.

"Well you know, anyone that breaks the law, people should be concerned about," said Sheriff Bailey, "I don't know if this gentlemen is armed but he's a drug dealer. He's selling drugs to our community in Michigan and your community down here in Indiana."

On Wednesday, police released the name of the suspect as 28-year-old Ryan Jamal Earl of South Bend.

Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call the Berrien County Sheriff's Department.
