South Bend mayor supports fight against gay marriage ban

State lawmakers are expected to consider an amendment to the Indiana Constitution that would permanently define marriage as between one-man and one woman.

A group called Freedom Indiana is fighting against that move.

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg is among several mayors in the state voicing opposition to the amendment.

He says, "Indiana's constitution exists in order to protect rights and freedoms, not take them away. Our state must be welcoming and respectful of all individuals, or we will be left behind."

The mayor is expected to attend a local kick-off event for "Freedom Indiana" on Wednesday night at the Chicory Cafe.
