The following are statements on the death of Nelson Mandela. It will be updated throughout the evening:

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder

"Nelson Mandela set out to transform a nation. In doing so, he made our entire world a better place. Through his convictions, courage and vision, he led the reforms that abolished the shameful policy of apartheid and established multiracial elections in South Africa. He suffered greatly because of his principles, yet was undeterred in his lifelong mission to combat poverty and other social ills stemming from decades of racial segregation.

"President Mandela was a man of great strength who saw the wisdom of peace. He used his office and international influence to heal a wounded nation. But his impact was felt far beyond the borders of his own country. His advocacy and leadership shined a much-needed spotlight on human rights issues across the globe, making a difference in countless lives. President Mandela advanced the causes of human dignity and equality around the world and rightfully has been recognized by honors such as the Nobel Peace Prize and the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom.
"The people of Michigan join the global community in mourning the loss of President Mandela, who will be remembered as one of the world's great leaders. We offer our humble appreciation for the work of this remarkable man, whose legacy as a statesman, reformer and peacemaker has left a better world for us and our children."

Indiana Rep. Jackie Walorski

"Nelson Mandela dedicated his life to the courageous pursuit of peace and justice for all.  During apartheid, I vividly remember President Mandela as an iconic and resolute leader who inspired an historic revolution for the people of South Africa.  Today, the world suffers a tragic loss, but Nelson Mandela's legacy will undoubtedly live on to inspire others to keep changing the world for better.  Our thoughts and prayers remain with the Mandela family during this difficult time."

Michigan Rep. Fred Upton

"Nelson Mandela's courageous leadership in the face of hatred and social injustice brought new life and new government to the oppressed people of South Africa. His words and actions will continue to inspire, strengthen, and bring hope to future generations," said Upton, who had the honor of personally meeting Mr. Mandela during the South African leader's address before a joint session of the United States Congress."

"He was a transformational figure on the world stage, but also a public servant of great humility.  We would be well-served by having more leaders follow his example."

"Nelson Mandela's powerful message of freedom, peace, and tolerance could not be confined by prison walls.  His spirit and legacy live on, bringing moral courage to those who face adversity and love to a world longing to heal."

"Our prayers are with his family and the people of South Africa."
