Construction on Bremen Highway coming to a close

Posted:

Construction is just about done on Bremen Highway near the Bypass in Mishawaka, and local businesses couldn't be happier.

Creative Edge Hair Studio Owner Dana Marely says since the start of construction on Bremen Highway in August, they've had their share of problems. She says clients didn't know how to get through construction, especially when their entrance was completely blocked off.

One of those confused clients of the salon, Lois Butler, says seeing so many orange cones was intimidating. "I got up to the traffic light and I thought, 'Oh, this looks easy.' Then I see all these orange barrels stacked up and I thought, 'Oh no!' But you have to go real slow going into the driveway," she says.

The problems have gone beyond dodging the orange barrels on the road. About three weeks ago, the salon was in the middle of a gas leak. It lost hot water for nearly 12 hours, and in the beauty business, that's a problem. Stylist Robin Yates had to wait until 3am for the gas to turn back on. "Thankfully he turned it on and everything was good. And we had hot water in the morning, because Friday morning is a big day for the ladies," says Yates.

To top it all off, on certain construction days the salon's normal entrance was blocked off. To try to help some of these businesses out for the time being, construction crews created make-shift roads in this field to try to help their customers get in and out. But it hasn't been very beneficial because cars have been getting stuck.

When one clients car got stuck, Yates says, "We had to wave down one of the construction workers to come get her out. And he did, gracefully." The Salon says the construction put a crimp in the number of walk-ins. But the salon says it hasn't been all that bad. The construction crews have been very helpful in giving weekly updates.  And, they're actually gaining some new call-in customers. "People were saying, 'Oh, I've never noticed you before. And this slower traffic has made me notice, so I'm coming in," says Yates.

Officials with the city of Mishawaka tell FOX28 that crews are expected to finish construction in the area by Wednesday - weather permitting. They still have to do lane-striping, and they can only do that if the temperature is above freezing.
