Pop up shops doing well despite short holiday shopping season

You have less than three weeks to finish your Christmas shopping.  Retailers have been concerned over the short shopping season this year between Thanksgiving and Christmas.  But we wanted to know how our local stores are doing that are just open for holiday shopping. FOX28's Kelly May checked in with the Downtown South Bend Pop up shops.

Amy Klingler at The Pigeon and the Hen Pottery said, "business has been fabulous we can't believe how well we did in the first month."  Klingler's "pop up" pottery shop is making you the artist this holiday season.

"We have a paint your own pottery shop, you can walk in and paint at any time," said Klingler

She's new to the Downtown South Bend "pop up shop" program.  Taking advantage of the free rent and utilities at some prime downtown retail space, and bringing variety to holiday gift giving.

Krista Keirnan, The Director of downtown business engagement said,  "The past three years that we've had it, six pop up shops have stayed "

Downtown South Bend said its been a success so far this season.  They're getting ready to see which of this year's shops, like Klingler's, have a business model that could be more permanent.

Kiernan said, "We'll be having those conversations next week about who can stay. "

This year the pop up shops are offering photography, bath and body products, home decor, games, and ceramics art.

So lets paint a picture of what it means if mid shopping season you choose to put the holiday jingle from your pocket into gifting from one of these small temporary businesses.  Kiernan said, "If people were to divert 10% of their holiday shopping or just any shopping in general to local businesses it would boost $325 million annually to the local economy"

The pop up shops will be open until December 28th.
