Mishawaka schools to discuss merger idea

The Mishawaka School Board is expected to discuss an idea to merge with either South Bend Schools or Penn Harris Madison Schools tonight at their meeting.

Monday FOX28 tried to talk to School Board members and the Superintendent about this idea but they told us they would not talk about until their meeting tonight.

Mishawaka School District was looking to raise $28 million with a voter referendum.  Since the referendum failed, the district is left in debt with several immediate school maintenance problems.

On the agenda for tonight's meeting is a "budget reduction report."  It states, "Dr. Barker and the Administration Center administrators will be presenting the initial ideas collectively generated to address the shortfall of funding relative to the facilities needs and Debt Fund obligation increases that must be planned for in the approaching budget cycles. This is a presentation and discussion agenda item. It is not meant to be a prioritized or restricted idea list. The Board will be asked to provide direction and additional thoughts relative to the information presented."

On Monday Penn Harris Madison Schools released a statement to FOX28 about the merger it said, "Penn-Harris-Madison's administration would not recommend a move toward consolidation with School City of Mishawaka or any district at this time because we do not feel that it is in the best interest of our students and families."

FOX28's Melanie Yuill will have more on the merger plans tonight on FOX28 News at 10 and here on FOX28.com.
