Students help out with Salvation Army's Adopt a Family

A local school is getting involved in the Salvation Army's Adopt a Family program.

Preschool and kindergarten students at the Stanley Clark school in South Bend have been collecting a pile of gifts and food over the past few weeks.

The classes were matched with a family with kids close to the students age, so they could get more involved with the shopping.

The school's teachers have been using the opportunity to give back as an educational tool. The kids are learning about how to give... rather than receive.

Tommy Borjas and Sage Feustel donated to Adopt A Family. The kids knew that who ever got their gifts were going to be happy.

Elizabeth Keim is a teacher at Stanley Clark School. "We talked a lot about what would it be like if you woke up Christmas morning and you didn't have any presents or you had nothing to open. Or what would it be like if you went outside to play and you had no warm clothes to wear." Keim says. "And when you're 3, 4 and 5, that's traumatic for them. So they understood that it would be very sad. "

This is the school's 10th year adopting a family.
