High School students battle in chili cook off

Students from Kalamazoo RESA, St. Joseph, Niles, and River Valley High Schools put on their aprons and battled for the title of best chili chef in Benton Harbor Friday.  Lake Michigan College hosted the Fifth Annual High School Hospitality and Culinary Arts Student Summit and Chili Cook-Off.  Twenty-two teams of four students each made their chili and cornbread with no premade ingredients, no sink or stove, and only portable butane burners to cook with.

Hospitality Management Instructor with Lake Michigan College, Chris Woodruff says this event is a fun way to get students to meet new friends and get them to think about new career possibilities.  "I want them to walk away with a since of accomplishment that they can do this," Woodruff said, "that they can be in a competitive environment and they can really succeed."

St. Joseph student, Andrea Summers says it is fun to work with her team to create something new.  "It is kind of stressful," Summers said, "it is exciting because you have this fun experience with your group of friends and it is something that I certainly won't forget."
