Families displaced following fire in Elkhart

Some Elkhart residents are out in the cold after a fire ripped through their home.

It happened in the 1600 block of 6th street just before 7:00 Saturday evening.

Elkhart fire officials tell FOX28 that the fire started in an upstairs apartment and caused extensive smoke and property damage.

They don't know how it started, but say the mom and kids who live there will have to find another place to stay for the rest of the weekend.

They weren't home at the time.

The man living downstairs will have to find temporary living too because of water damage.

"I've been staying here probably two or three weeks now. I haven't even had a chance to get renters insurance so I hope there's not too much damage to my apartment anything in my apartment," says Jirrell Carson who lives on the first floor.

Firefighters were able to knock the fire down quickly.

They shut down the block while gas lines were checked.
