Kelly updates "The State of the ND Program" after busy week

Every once in a while the president gives the country the "State of the Union" speech.

Well Saturday, you could argue that Brian Kelly's press conference could be considered the "State of the Program". Coach took questions related to everything from the Pinstripe Bowl to the departure of his defensive coordinator.

There were plenty of questions about the status of Everett Golson. The quarterback was readmitted to school Friday and just like some of the players on the team, Coach Kelly is getting excited about #5's return to action.

However, while the team is happy to see Golson return, Coach knows the quarterback will have to be ready to prove some doubters wrong when he gets back on the field.

"There's going to be a lot of noise surrounding Everett Golson," said Kelly. "I think there's going to be as many people looking for him not to succeed as there will be for him to succeed. Unfortunately, not everybody likes a good story. There will be some cynics out there. I think we're going to have to support him, but I think he's prepared to handle all those things."

Another hot topic was the departure of Bob Diaco.

Diaco had been the defensive coordinator for Coach Kelly since back in his days at Cincinnati. Kelly says when Diaco told the team he was heading to UConn for a head coaching gig that no one was surprised.

"After the initial 'wow coach Diaco's leaving,' I got a chance to talk to our team and after they realized it's a great opportunity for him professionally, they just wished him the best," said Kelly.

Of course, the Irish also have their eyes set on the Pinstripe Bowl. They are just two weeks away from kickoff and the team is expecting things to be just as cold, if not colder, than the temperatures during the BYU game.

Since they are expecting a frozen environment out in New York, coach says he wants to get the team outside for a few practices over the next two weeks.

"It's a definite factor in wanting to get our kids acclimated to getting outside no question," said Kelly.

The Irish will have a sporadic practice schedule over the next couple of weeks due to the exam period at Notre Dame.
