Irish leave local underprivileged kids feeling lucky

Briar Russell could not believe it when he found out he got to go on a $100 shopping spree with Notre Dame cornerback Bennett Jackson.

"It was like just boom," said Russell. "Just mind blowing."

For the 12-year-old Notre Dame fan it was like Santa came early.

"Because I got to spend hang out with my best buddy Bennett and we got  matching Santa Hats that are completely swagalicious," said Russell.

Russell was one of a hundred underprivileged kids from St. Joe county who got to weave through the aisles of Meijer with a Fighting Irish Player Sunday afternoon.

It's all part of the Kelly Cares annual shop with a player charity event, where each kid is given a $100 gift card to buy Christmas gifts.

"Our [Notre Dame players] are so privileged," said Brian Kelly, Notre Dame Head Coach. "They're on scholarship, they have everything going for themselves and they get the opportunity with some kids who don't have all those things going for them."

The fun didn't stop with filling their shopping carts with presents.  After they finished up at Meijer, the kids got to enjoy a four course meal donated by Papa Vino's.

Tieler Jefferies said it was a great way to end the day, because not only did he get to go home with a bag full of gifts, but also left with stomach full of delicious food.

"It's actually been pretty good because I bought my family a lot of stuff and I had fun with the Notre Dame Students," said Jefferies.

Coach Kelly and the team were happy to send all the kids home with smiles.
