Dog Rescued from St. Joe River

Natalie Tavernier was on her way to work at the Michiana YMCA Monday when she saw a dog pacing from the road back to the St. Joe River.  She went to check and see if the dog had tags, then quickly realized it was alerting her to another dog that had slipped through the ice in the river.

"He was trying to pull himself out," Tavernier says.  "He had ice crystals on his fur. He was just clenching on the side."

Tavernier says she called the fire department and rescue workers quickly responded.  "I stuck around until they got him out."

Tavernier says the real hero is the dog who originally alerted her that something was wrong.  She's grateful they are both safe.
