Sunny weather brings out holiday shoppers

The countdown is on. There's only one week until Christmas and stores are making sure shoppers have plenty of opportunities to get those special items on their list.

It's been an unusual shopping season this year. First, there are fewer days between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Add to that, snowy weekends when shoppers would normally be checking items off their list.

The businesses we talked to Wednesday say it was a busy shopping day.

It's the first snowless day in quite some time and shoppers took advantage of the mild weather.

"I have 10 grandchildren, so I keep very busy," says Judy Mathis, who was shopping at Kohl's.

She says shopping has been a little tricky this year, "The weather isn't cooperating too well either," says Mathis.

The sun came out on Wednesday long enough for Mathis to get out there and check some more gifts off her shopping list.

"I'm getting close to the end, thank God," says Mathis.

With just a few more days left to shop, businesses are opening their doors, and offering deals.

"We've extended our annual sale until this weekend, so people can come in, even if it's last minute, and still get the same deal," says Kyle Dermeter with J.R. Fox Jewelers in South Bend.

J.R. Fox Jewelers says they'd like to be doing even more free gift wrapping this weekend.

The store is expecting and hoping for big crowds this weekend. Snow or shine.

"It's kinda been steady the whole way. I think the weather's been keeping people away the first couple weekends. But this weekend we're expecting a big finish," says Dermeter.

The same is true for Kohl's. The retailer will be open for 100 straight hours starting Friday through Christmas Eve.

"I was here earlier today, so this is the second time around. Couple exchanges that have to be made," says Ardena Enders, who was shopping at Kohl's, Wednesday.

Best Buy has started extending hours for shoppers too and expects a big rush for the last shopping weekend before Christmas.

"We're here. We're open, and we're here to get you taken care of. No matter what Christmas gift you're looking for, Best Buy has it," says Multi-Channel Sales Supervisor, Sarah Boersma.

Shoppers say, whether the weather cooperates or not, the clock is ticking to get the rest of the shopping done. But that's not the final task before Christmas.

"Then the wrapping. That's husband's part," says Enders.

Some local stores we talked to this week felt the bad weather had definitely impacted sales so far this season.

Others like the Concord Mall, on the other hand, say it's been a good season.

Everyone agrees they would love a snow free weekend to really boost last minute sales.

According to the National Retail Federation, the average shopper has only finished half of his or her shopping, and many haven't even started yet.
