Elkhart County Sheriff debuts alert system

The Elkhart County Sheriff Department introduced their new interactive alert system in a news conference at their headquarters Friday morning.

The new system will offer Elkhart County residents the opportunity to receive police alerts, send in tips by text and email, and pick and choose which alerts they receive by individual township. Registration for the service will be handled through the Sheriff Department website.

Users of the system will soon have three options for sending in tip. Tips can be emailed to the sheriff department, texted to TIP-411 with "ECSD" written before the tip, submitted through a smartphone app that is currently in development, or sent through the website.

The Sheriff Department claimed that this service is not intended to compete with the services provided by Crimestoppers and they will still provide alerts through Twitter and Facebook. They added that this service was paid for with discretionary funds, not taxpayer dollars.
