Infant killed in Sturgis apartment fire

Posted:

An infant was killed in an early morning apartment fire.

The Sturgis Fire Department was called to the Gateway Village apartments around 5:30 Sunday morning.

When firefighters got there, they were told there was an 11-month-old child still inside.

Firefighters rescued the infant and did CPR until the ambulance came, but the child died in the Emergency Room.

The fire reportedly started in the parents' bedroom.

They were also taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

No word on what started the fire.

Occupants of the building were evacuated and a temporary shelter was opened at the Sturgis-Young Auditorium.

Some are expected to be able to return to their apartments later in the day on Sunday.

Others will need to find alternative residency.
