Christmas tree pick up starts Thursday for South Bend

Posted:

When you're done with your gifts, how about giving back to the environment!

The city of South Bend is offering three options for recycling your natural Christmas trees.

First, you can drop off your tree at one of three locations starting Thursday through January 18th from 7 AM to 6 PM, 7 days a week.

  • Rum Village Park - Ewing Avenue at Gertrude Street
  • Pinhook Park - 2800 block of Riverside Drive
  • Veterans Memorial Park - Twyckenham Drive at Northside Blvd.

You can also call to have the city come and pick up your tree at 574-235-9244.

Finally, automatic pick up will start on January 7th and go through the 18th.

The city asks residents to follow these guidelines for tree pickup:

  • All trees should be placed at curbside by 6:00 AM.  Do not place trees in the street or in alleys.
  • Please remove all lights, ornaments, and metal, including tree stands or nails, before discarding Christmas trees. Items left on trees can injure employees or seriously damage the tree shredding equipment, leaving it inoperable.
  • Artificial trees and trees containing any metal, glass, or wire, will not be collected and will be the owner's responsibility to dispose.

For those of you that live in Mishawaka, the city will start picking up your trees next week.
