Over 500 people skiing on Christmas

Christmas isn't always a day spent indoors by the tree. Over 500 skiers were out at Swiss Valley on Christmas, and some families are making it a new tradition.

When it comes to working on Christmas, ski instructor Joseph King says, "There's no place I'd rather be!"

King is one of the instructors at Swiss Valley Ski Slopes, located in Jones, Michigan. Just two hours after opening he had already given four lessons. "We've had everything. I've had them 3 years old all the way to 70," says King.

So why does Swiss Valley stay open on Christmas? Jamie Stafne is the Marketing Director for Swiss Valley. She says, "We're about the season. We're about skiing and snowboarding, and that happens to take place in the winter just like Christmas takes place in the winter."

The slopes are open even on Christmas Eve, New Years Eve, and New Years Day.

Diedri Stauffacher brought her family out to the slopes on Christmas.

"After opening gifts and instead of laying around on the couch and hanging out, no matter what we were going to be together as a family," says Stauffacher. She says this is their first year coming to the slopes together as a family. Her daughter Brynn Stauffacher says,  "It's fun going down the hills and being with my family." The family plans on making the slopes an annual tradition now.

Many families made the trip, even from out of state. Stafne says, "Today we had a couple families visiting from the south visiting other families."

And after a long day of snowboarding and skiing... families enjoy cozying up and staying warm at Swiss Valley's fireplace. "This is the best fireplace in the state of Michigan. We've been all over. Nothings like this," says Sher Rudi.
