Tips for holiday returns and exchanges

Posted:

The Traditional holiday shopping period may be over.  But stores are still packed with people!

That's because it's time to return!

Thursday evening Jack Seifer said he was returning a DVD set at Best Buy because, "We bought the wrong format."

That certainly not the only return Best Buy dealt with Thursday, they were packed.

Benjamin Worden said, "I'm returning a ram chip I got for my computer for Christmas, it didn't work."

Best Buy Sales Supervisor, Sarah Boersma said, "it has been pretty crazy at times, definitely very steady."

Sarah Boersma said this time of year there's always a line for returns and exchanges.  "This is typically a very busy day in fact next weekend is gonna be very busy.  People are still off of work, they're off school so they want to not only go out and have fun but get those returns and exchanges taken care of."

And before you take care of all that you may want to make sure you fully understand the store's policies.  Boersma said Best Buy's holiday return policy is pretty much the same as last year.

But they are on Kiplinger's list of stores with tougher return policies.  If you bought a holiday gift they only give you until January 15th to return.  Boersma said that's because they want everything in tip top shape for re-sale.  "We like to make sure for our customers sake that we are using product control for everything that's coming back."

Other stores on Kiplinger's list are Gamestop because they limit returns to seven to 30 days depending on the item, Barnes & Noble because they do not accept returns for Nook books and magazines, Overstock.com because they only offer a partial refund if an item has been opened and Gilt because they only allow items like clothing, footwear, and belts to be returned.

Kiplinger said most retailers offer a 30 day window for refunds or exchanges.  But if you don't know a store's return policy just ask.

There are apps that can help you sort out return policies.  Finance Experts recommend one called Return Guru.  It allows you to take a picture of your receipt then it sends you information about the return policy.
