Mayor Buttigieg is betting on the Irish

Mayor Pete Buttigieg will be paying close attention to Saturday's Pinstripe Bowl.  He's betting on the Irish and he's got a lot riding on it.

He and the Mayor of Rutger's Hometown, Piscataway, NJ, have made a friendly wager on the game.

Friday afternoon South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg said, "last year as you'll recall I put up South Bend chocolate against Alabama's finest ribs.  Unfortunately I had to pay up last year."

Buttigieg thinks things will go differently this year.   "I feel like this year the odds are pretty good."

So he's putting his money where his mouth is, kind of.  Buttigieg said, "I had a nice chat on the phone earlier today with my counterpart in Piscataway, NJ, which is where Rutgers is and we agreed to a bit of a friendly bet.  So when Notre Dame wins he's gonna be sending me some gourmet Italian food."

Piscataway Mayor Brian Wahler isn't so sure that's how things will play out.   "I have full confidence in Coach Flood and especially the outgoing seniors," said Wahler.

Mayor Wahler thinks he'll be keeping all the Italian delicacies he bought from Roma Performance Food service in New Jersey.  "I have right now two 12 pound rolls of pork roll, a very large 8 pound salami, about a 7 pound thing of mozzarella and also some provolone and a boatload of Italian products."

Of course Mayor Buttigieg wagered something just as tasty.  "In the unlikely event that something goes wrong at the bowl game I offered to send him this basket of South Bend chocolate company chocolates," said Buttigieg.

But that's not all.  Buttigieg said, "should they win I would have to wear a Rutgers sweatshirt around town for a day and he promised that when Notre Dame wins we'll get photo proof that he will have worn this around New Jersey for a day."

We'll know who won the bet after Saturday's Pinstripe Bowl.  The game is at noon.
