Unprecedented number of pop up shops becoming permanent

The season is over for Downtown South Bend Pop Up shops and now we have new details on how successful the program has been for businesses

Amy Klingler at The Pigeon & The Hen Pottery said, "It went awesome, better than we could have dreamed it could have gone."

After that success Klingler said she wants a permanent spot in Downtown South Bend.  "We feel really great about it, we're really enthused."

Rumor has it The Pigeon and The Hen isn't the only pop up shop that wants to stay.  Saturday James Munoz with The Ludus Machine told us, "a lot of us pop up shops are meeting with the landlord I think either this week or next week about possibly staying in our current locations or someone else in the building."

But actually it's not just a rumor, Sunday Krista Keirnan with Downtown South Bend said it's true!  "We've got five right now that are looking to sign leases in their spaces that they are currently in."

She said this kind of success is unprecedented.  "It's really exciting!  On average we have about two stay per year so to have five wanting to stay right away in January just blows our numbers out of the water."

One reason things went so well may be because of a new buddy program this year.  The pop up shops partnered with Score and Indiana Small Business Development Center.  "Each organization gave a pop up shop a buddy and what that buddy did was help them look at numbers, help them project out what does the whole year look like, can we really sustain this business," said Keirnan.

So when will the pop up shops re-open their doors as permanent shops?  Probably March or April.  Keirnan said, "if they're signing leases in January what we'll most likely want to do is close down during January and February, most likely because in retail that's the hardest time to get people to buy anything anyway.  So re-opening in the spring, renovating their spaces to how they truly want it as a permanent shop."
