H1N1 could be coming to St. Joseph County

Posted:

The St. Joseph County Health Department wants to warn citizens that there is a rise in the number of positive flu cases in the county.  The CDC says there are ten states that are experiencing full blown seasonal flu.  There is a concern this is involving H1N1, the same virus that was so deadly in 2009 and 2010.  That virus is known to make young and middle age adults much more sick than the regular flu.

St. Joseph County Health Officer, Dr Thomas Felger says it is not too late to get the flu shot.  "It is not too late," Felger said, " what we are seeing now is the very start, it will be here, we don't know when, it could be a week, it could be three or four weeks; but certainly it is getting to the point, the sooner the better."

If you have already gotten a flu shot this year, it contained the H1N1 vaccine.  If you haven't, Dr. Felger says you should get it as soon as you can.

If receiving your shot at the Health Department, the cost is $25 cash, credit card, or is free with Medicare Part B.  You can get your shot at the following locations:

South Bend Location- 227 W. Jefferson Blvd, 9th Floor, County-City Building
Monday-Friday, 8-12 p.m. & 1-4 p.m.

Mishawaka Location- 219 Lincolnway W., County Services Building
Monday-Friday 8-12 p.m. & 1:30-4 p.m.
