Snowy weather puts kink in New Year's celebrations

Posted:

Revelers at Fiddler's Hearth in South Bend got an early start to celebrating. They rang in the new year as the clock struck 12:00 a.m. in Scotland, that's 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

"We were just looking for something different to do and we wanted to get out," says Stephanie Krause, who came out to celebrate.

Reveler Wesley Wood says, "I wanted to try something new."

While it wasn't quite a packed house, plenty of people still came out to welcome 2014.

"I'm ready to celebrate. I'm a celebratory person and I'm going to go out no matter what," says South Bend resident Carolynn Hine-Johnson.

For those out and about this New Year's Eve, street crews reminded drivers to be extra cautious and plan ahead.

Crews are forfeiting their holiday celebrations to keep the roads safe.

"Our highway crews are out there working to keep the roads safe for the traveling public," says St. Joseph County engineer, Jessica Clark.

The St. Joe County Highway Department has night and day crews that will continue to take on the roads as long as necessary.

"Each of our highway supervisors monitor the situation and call in the amount of workforce that's necessary to get the job done," says Clark.

INDOT will also have crews working 12 hour shifts.

Not everyone was willing to take on the weather to celebrate. Landmark Liquor in South Bend was been busy with people stocking up on New Year's Eve bubbly.

The manager said some folks have said the weather was keeping them home for their celebrations.

Tim and Lisa Riley of Ann Arbor, Michigan said they were happy to have indoor plans to ring in the new year, "Going to my sister's house for a New Year's Eve Party," says Tim Riley.

The Rileys just hoped for clear roads after the celebration.

Police caution everyone to have a plan if you're going to be drinking. Either call a cab or have a designated driver. Officers will be out looking for drunk drivers.
