St. Joseph County reports first flu death of season

The St. Joseph County Health Department has confirmed a 25-year-old died from the H1N1 flu.

It happened in December. County Health Officer Dr. Thomas Felger could not reveal many details of the death due to privacy concerns, but did say the patient had pre-existing conditions.

Dr. Felger says the age of the victim is telling. He says H1N1 is unique in its tendency to have harsh consequences, event for younger and healthier individuals.

Statewide, flu cases are on the rise. Hospitals are reporting more flu cases, which is backed up by the most recent flu report from the Indiana Department of Health.

Dr. Felger says it is not too late to get your flu shot, which covers H1N1.
