Snowy roads are unavoidable for some in Michiana

We've all driven in the snow before.  But if Thursday morning's commute through it all felt a little worse than usual you may be right.  It has to do with the timing of the snow storm. "With the accumulation of when we received it also being that it is a holiday we didn't have full work shifts on New Years Day itself," said St. Joseph County Engineer Jessica Clark.

Clark said they did have a night shift Wednesday night, but they also had to call crews in early Thursday morning to help clear the roads.  She said they did have it all under control by mid morning.

There are people who can't wait for the roads to be clear, they have to be out driving.

Papa John's Delivery Driver Joseph Horton is one of those people.  "Just like any other driver you want to be watching out for your safety," said Horton. When you want a pizza he's there to deliver it - but snow changes a few things.  "We can't even really do the speed limit, we try to go under that.  It's a lot of watching out and taking off slower," said Horton. "There's even nights we don't give delivery times because we can't be pressured to go fast."

Emergency responders find the snowy roads tricky too.

"One of the challenges we have is if a road hasn't been cleared properly yet there's no place for traffic to pull off," said Dave Cherrone with Clay Fire Territory.

Cherrone said do what you can to help them out without making yourself the next 911 call.  "Keep in mind that we're obviously going somewhere to help someone else... so we just ask folks to move as far to the right as they can that's still safe for you."

Another piece of advice that helps you and the emergency responders, brake early.  "Obviously no one can stop quickly on slippery roads," said Cherrone.

And when you're frequenting these snowy roads, it's important not to stress.  Horton said stress just makes driving in snow worse.  "I just try to stay calm about it and take it nice and easy." That way he and your dinner make it to your door safely.

Horton says he does protect the pizza - just in case. "Sometimes I even put a seat belt on them," said Horton.
