News Release from the City of South Bend:

CITY OF SOUTH BEND ISSUES DISASTER EMERGENCY DECLARATION

The City of South Bend, in conjunction with the St. Joseph County Emergency Management Agency, has issued a Disaster Emergency Declaration through Tuesday, January 7 with heavy snowfall and frigid temperatures expected. Residents are asked to stay indoors and off the roads.

A Travel Advisory Warning is in effect for St. Joseph County through noon Tuesday, January 7. Because slick, snow covered streets will produce hazardous conditions, only public safety vehicles are permitted on the roads.

The National Weather Service has issued a dangerous cold weather notice. High temperatures are forecasted to be in the single digits with lows well below zero. Wind chills are predicted to be between 30 and 40 degrees below zero. Temperatures and wind chills that low cross the line from discomfort to genuinely life threatening.

The City is partnering with St. Joseph County on two warming sites. The Martin Luther King Recreation Center, 1522 W. Linden, is now open 24 hours as a warming center. The O'Brien Recreation Center, 321 E. Walter St., will also be open as a warming site from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm on January 6 and 7.

In addition, the Kroc Center, 900 W. Western Ave, will open its doors to the community during its normal business hours—until 5:00 pm January 5, and 5:30 am to 9:00 pm January 6 and 7.

The City has also issued an amnesty on snow shoveling, temporarily not enforcing an ordinance that residents must clear their sidewalks of snow within 24 hours of a snowfall. Residents are urged to exercise common sense and should not attempt to shovel snow in subzero temperatures.

City offices will be closed on Monday, January 6 with only essential personnel on duty. Residents with questions about non-emergency services are encouraged to call 311, South Bend's citizen service line, between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm.
