Businesses and homes in part of South Bend lost power between 9:00am and 1:06pm Wednesday.  The outage was expected, though.

Repairs on the northeast side of South Bend meant about 600 Indiana Michigan Power customers were going to be without power on Wednesday, and Friday for about 150 other customers.

I&M says a downed power line tripped a substation circuit Monday evening. Crews were able to switch the customers to a different substation, keeping power on during the extreme cold.

In order to make a permanent repair, I&M says they had to cut power to some customers. The first, and largest, outage was Wednesday.  There will be another on Friday in an area near Edison, Ironwood, Twyckenham and South Bend Avenue (please see map for more detail).

150 customers in the area will have just one more one-minute long outage on Friday around 6:00am.

At the Walgreen's off Ironwood, customers found the door locked with a sign saying the store will not be re-open until this afternoon.  People we spoke to say it's frustrating but they understand the consequences of severe weather.

Homeowners we spoke to say their plan to stay warm is to leave their house.  One South Bend women says she plans on staying with relatives for the day and will come back to her house near Edison later this evening.

Indiana Michigan Power says it has contacted residential customers by calling the phone number listed on their account. The message indicated how long the customer is expected to be without power. Commercial customers were notified by their I&M account manager.
