Elkhart Community Schools discussing referendum

Even though Elkhart Community Schools remain closed because of the deep freeze, the School Board is forging ahead with business.

That's because they need to act quickly if they want to get a hand-full of referenda before voters in May.

Board members met Monday night despite the poor road conditions.

They voted unanimously to seek support for two projects, updating safety in the district's buildings and paying for improvements in transportation.

Superintendent Dr. Robert Haworth says the board also wants to keep the tax rate neutral for 2014 and 2015.

"There's never a good time to really to talk about taxes and raising taxes, but in our community, the Elkhart School Community, we're getting ready to have a lot of our debt roll off," says Haworth.

The proposed safety-maintenance construction project would cost $19 million.

Because it exceeds $12 million, state law requires the district to gather signatures before the referenda can be put on the May ballot.
