Fire departments warn businesses to clear snow from exits

Clay Fire is wanting to remind people to shovel out all of their exits around a building, even if they are not commonly used.  With all of the heavy snow Michiana has gotten, some emergency exits are unable to open.

Clay Fire Territory Fire Marshal, Dave Cherrone says it is easy to forget to shovel out a door that isn't commonly used, but not doing so is very dangerous.  "Everybody is making sure their driveways are clear, their parking spaces are clear for their patrons," Cherrone said, "but the one thing they are probably forgetting is that all of the doors that are marked exit on the inside are probably blocked by snow on the outside."

Another reminder for people is to clear their fire hydrants so firefighters can get to them in an emergency.  Firefighters would like a three foot radius cleared out around a hydrant, so they can get to them as fast as possible.
