Two Michiana kids look to win national PPK titles

There are two completely different kids, from two completely different parts of Michiana, but both share the same dream of winning the National Punt Pass and Kick Competition.

This Saturday, after months of hard work, both Nick Hooley, from Napanee, and Hunter Renner, from Mishawaka, will have the chance to fulfill their dream. They are heading to Denver for the National PPK competition.

It's a chance only the top four kids in every age group get, so these guys know they've got their work cut out for them.

"You just have to practice," said Renner, who will compete in the 10 & 11 year old age group. "Don't just sit around all day."

Both kids head to Denver feeling pretty confident. After beating some of the best competition at the Chicago Bears Punt Pass and Kick competition a few weeks ago, Hooley and Renner say they know they can do even better at the national level.

"Just have to keep my (PPKs) a little bit straighter," said Hooley, who is in the 12 & 13 year old group. "Keep all 3 of them a little straighter and a little farther."

One of the perks of the championship includes being introduced on the field during the Broncos playoff game against the Chargers on Sunday.

Renner said his friends were shocked when he told them he was going to the game.

"They're jealous because a lot of them play football and they want me to play football," said Renner. "But I play soccer."

That's right; Renner doesn't even play football. However, he someday wants to play kicker in high school.

"Its similar because I'm coming at it at an angle when I'm kicking it and that's the same as soccer," said Renner.

Hooley on the other hand, has grown up around football and plans to play quarterback at Northridge in a few years. That is why he's looking forward to watching Peyton Manning play in person.

"I'm looking forward to getting to see him play because I know he's one of the best, if not the best quarterback of all time," said Hooley.

Of course more than anything, both guys are looking forward to the competition.

"Just got to be accurate," said Renner. "Try and kick it far."

"Just try and do the best that I can and not worry about the competition cause that can make you nervous," said Hooley.
