UPDATE: Kids returning to school as temps begin to rise

Posted: Updated:

Most kids in Michiana were heading back to school Thursday after an extended winter break.  The polar vortex that brought snow and frigid temperatures to Michiana canceled classes for all area students earlier this week.

Parents we spoke to at Liberty Elementary in Mishawaka were happy to see the kids getting back into their normal routine.  "I love my son," said Danielle Chester, "But it's nice to see him go back to school."

Danielle said her son wasn't quite as happy about the return to classes.  "He was dreading this morning," she said.  Some kids were excited, though.  Anna Porter said he grandson was definitely looking forward to school.  "He happier than I am," Anna told us.

Schools have been granted a waiver for the first two days of cancellations by the state.  That means they'll only have to make-up the Wednesday classes sometime in the future.

Teresa Caroll with PHM schools says they'll do their make-up day on March 21st.  They are also pushing back finals for the first semester a few days.  Caroll says the end of the first semester is now January 17, instead of January 14.

Shawn Hannon with Elkhart schools says they have not decided whether they are going to request a waiver or not.  Elkhart has three snow days built into their calendar, and are prepared to teach a full 180 day school year.

Mishawaka told us they also applied for the waiver and will make up for yesterdays closing with a make-up day on March 28th. They and most districts have some snow days built into their calendar. They also have a make up day scheduled for April 21st -- to make up for their snow day earlier in December.

South Bend Community School Corporation told us they applied for the waiver on Wednesday. They will use Monday, April 21st as a make-up day. They will end their semester on time.

Other schools are considering changes to their schedules as well.  You should check with your school district for information on make-up days.

Pastor Mario Sims calls for Citizens' Review Board in response to frustration with government

Pastor Mario Sims, other spiritual leaders, and community "watch dog groups" announced plans today for a Citizens' Review Board. Sims said he believes there is a lack of public trust in South Bend's government. "Enough is enough. Understand the concept of a small handful of cronies padding their pockets, but it could cost us our city," Sims said. He says South Bend needs a Review Board that could hold city agencies accountable, something he thinks isn't happening.More >>
