78,000lbs of Turkey being canned in Goshen

Posted:

Imagine seeing 78,000 pounds of turkey! Well, a group of volunteers has not only seen but cut and canned that much turkey these past couple of days. The Mennonite Central Committee mobile meat canner is parked at The Depot in Goshen.

Hundreds of volunteers have come together to cut turkey thighs into one inch pieces to be canned. Over 45,000 cans will be sent off to feed the hungry in Haiti, Bosnia, and the Ukraine. 10% of the meat canned in Goshen will also be locally distributed to the Great Lakes region.

85% of the volunteers are from the Amish Mennonite church. Volunteer Laban Hochstetler says, "I like to do any part of it. Cutting, pushing the cans through the labeler, and being just with these people."

If you want to help the committee group is looking for more volunteers to help. Donations will be accepted to cover the $160,000 cost of the turkey and canner operations. Volunteers can contact the meat canning office at (574)534-3860.
