Snowstorm, subzero cold felt by local government

Posted: Updated:

Indiana's local governments are tallying the mounting costs of the recent snowstorm that buried much of the state under a foot of snow.

Last week's storm saddled local highway departments with significant employee overtime and fuel expenses as crews struggled to clear snow-clogged roads.

Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett tells the Tribune-Star the storm is expected to costs his city tens of thousands of dollars in added expenses.

Vigo County highway superintendent Dan Bennett says that aside from fuel and staffing costs, the county also faces several towing bills from snowplows that got stuck during the storm.

And it's not just government officials who are facing storm-related costs.

Many Indiana residents have paid in many ways, including for furnace repairs, unplanned stays in motels and towing fees.
