3 ECA Eagles have flown together for awhile

Elkhart Christian Academy's 7-1 start this season is quite a surprise to many people who follow high school basketball.

However, for seniors, Ryan Kupferschmid, Cory Waycaster, and Kenny Bearss, it's just a testament to the chemistry they've been working on for years.

"We've been playing together for like seven years now, so we each other better than we know ourselves," said Kupferschmid.

Just a few years ago, the Eagles senior trio was the best group of home schooled players in the nation.

They played in tournaments all around the country. Finished their 8th grade season 40-0. Then topped that year off by winning the Home School Basketball National Title in Missouri.

"It's awesome," said Kenny Bearss. "It's a dream come true to play with two of my best friends growing up. I just know we've grown up playing together and know each other so well on the court. I think we have some of the best chemistry around."

This year, under the direction of head coach Ryan Culp, the Eagles are off to one of their best starts in school history.

Culp says a lot of that early success gets credited to how well Kupferschmid, Waycaster, and Bearss play together.

"I think it was early, like three years ago, we saw their freshman year that these guys knew each other well and had played a lot of basketball together," said Culp. "They knew where each other were on the court."

Kenny Bearrs's father, Dan, is now an assistant coach for the Eagles. But even back when the ECA trio was raking in the trophies on the home school level, Dan was there to coaching them to big win after big win.

"It was pretty evident that they were dedicated to the game of basketball," said Dan Bearss. "You knew because of their dedication they were going to be special players."

The strong bond the three Eagles have shared for years is starting to pay off and the group is dreaming big again.

Not only do they have their eyes set on winning E-C-A's first sectional title in basketball in school history. Just like they did four years ago, this group wants to win the grand prize; an Indiana State Class 1A Title.

"You know we're dreamers and we try and make our dreams happen," said Waycaster. "You know dreams do come true and if you believe that and obviously all our guys do, I believe that we can. "

The Eagles already have wins over 4A schools like Mishawaka and Elkhart Memorial. They play at South Bend St. Joseph Tuesday night.
