Indiana releases A-F grades for school districts

Posted:

The Indiana Department of Education has released A-F grades for school districts in the 2012-2013 school year.  Several schools in our area had notable changes over the previous year's grades.  Baugo Schools improved their grade from a C to an A, while South Bend Schools dropped from a C to a D.

Baugo Superintendent James DuBois says it is the third piece of recent good news for the district. He says they also have learned they have among the highest iRead scores and tied for 5th in the state in math score growth. DuBois hopes the district can continue to sustain the improvements. He says the district has been working hard on a 2020 plan which aims to make 100% of students ready for college or the workforce.

The state's grading system has been under fire this past year, including from South Bend Superintendent Glenda Ritz, who filed a lawsuit against board member over grade calculations.  That lawsuit was dismissed.

The state is changing the way schools are graded, but those changes will not go into effect until the 2014-2015 school year.
