Parts of the US 20 bypass were closed for more than eight hours Wednesday after two semi trucks collided and leaked hundreds of gallons of chemicals.

The accident started just east of Elm Road when one of the semi-trucks rear ended another semi going east-bound. That semi then crashed into the center barrier along the bypass, causing extensive damage to the truck's cabin and the highway.

Nearly 100 gallons of diesel fuel and 275 gallons of wood paint were inside the truck and leaked onto the bypass.

Division Chief Brian Kazmierzak with Penn Township fire says that crews brought up "a bunch of damming and dyking material to keep it from going into the drains and temporarily stop it. And then they'll be a private contractor that will come up and clean up the rest of it."

The driver of the second semi was initially trapped inside the cabin for about 15-minutes. He was taken to a local hospital and surprisingly only suffered minor injuries.

All lanes of the bypass re-opened around 7:45 Wednesday night.
