Police: Walmart arson suspect confessed before fleeing

Berrien County detectives say that their suspect in an arson and theft at a Niles Walmart admitted to committing the crimes before leading them on a chase and taking his own life.

Detectives say they found James Turns at his home in Granger and, although he initially denied being involved in the January 11 incident, eventually admitted to setting a fire at the Walmart as a diversion before stealing electronics and fleeing the store.  Police say he also admitted to trying to do the same thing on January 10, but got scared and left.

Turns reportedly returned some of the items to the officers before fleeing his home.  He eventually took his own life after failing to break into a home.  The St. Joseph County prosecutor's office has ruled Turns' death a suicide.
