Investigators to review Elkhart Grocery Store Shooter's Facebook Page and Criminal Record

The investigation into Wednesday's tragedy at the Martin's on Bristol in Elkhart is now in the hands of the Indiana State Police.  Captain Trent Smith says they are looking to talk to people who may have had contact with the shooter, Shawn Bair.
"We have been to his house," Smith says.  "The subject was living with his parents.  We had a consent to search the house.  Some items of evidentiary value were recovered from the house."

We don't know yet what those items are, but we can tell you what was posted on Shawn Bair's Facebook page.  His past profile pictures included serial killers H.H. Holmes and Ted Bundy.  The page also showed interest in the Documentary "Serial Killers: The Real Life Hannibal Lecters."  The authorities are well aware of the page.  "I can tell you that we are looking at the facebook page.  We are investigating that," Smith says.

Bair's timeline also includes hateful posts.  One says, "When I'm in hell I hope you pass through my rack."  Another says, "I hope you all burn in the furthest pits of hell."

Smith was asked during an afternoon news conference how Bair's parents reacted when authorities knocked on their door to tell them about the deaths at Martin's.  "It's like any parent, I mean you don't ever want to think it of your own child involved with something like that," he said.

Investigators are also looking at Bair's criminal record. Records from the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department website show Bair was arrested for possession of marijuana and a controlled substance in June of 2009.  He pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to probation and work release.

In January of 2010 records show Bair was arrested on a theft charge for stealing something from a Martin's store.  The charges were filed four years to the day of Wednesday's tragedy.  Court records indicate in May of 2010 he was committed to Oaklawn, a mental health and addictions treatment center.  Just days later he pleaded guilty to the theft charge.

As part of the sentence he was again put on probation and ordered to get an addictions assessment at Oaklawn, enroll in an outreach program at the center and get a primary doctor.  Records show he completed his probation in December of 2011.

That's just part of what investigators are working with as they try to piece together Bair's past and a possible motive to the Martin's shooting.  "There's no doubt in my mind that over the next few days," Smith says.  "We're probably going to uncover some things that people are now going to say something didn't look right or maybe he said something."

If you've had any interaction with Bair that could help police, call the ISP Bremen Post at 574-546-4900.
