Praise for Elkhart officers who responded to shooting

Posted:

We don't yet know the names of the officers who responded to Wednesday night's shooting. On Thursday, there was praise for their quick response.

"I'm also, as has been mentioned, so appreciative of a police department that was able to make a 3 minute response, was trained to do the job, and then had the courage to do the job as well," Elkhart Mayor Dick Moore said during Thursday's news conference with Indiana State Police.

"But for the timely response of the police department, there is an overwhelming probability of more death - there's absolutely no question about that," said Elkhart County Prosecutor Curtis Hill.

Indiana State Police Superintendent Doug Carter says he's been looking into shooting incidents since Columbine in 1999 He says he isn't aware of anything like what officers were able to do Thursday night.

"Generally, that 4 to 6 minutes response time is about the average," said Carter. "And generally, the damage that has been inflicted is - the intended death that has been caused - is over. But, not today - not last night. And I can't wait to sit down with those officers and personally thank them and tell them how much admiration and forever respect I will have for them."

While the Elkhart Police Department doesn't have a Facebook page of its own, many people have been commenting on a generic page about the department on the social network site. One person posted "they no doubt saved a lot of lives."
