Following multiple flu deaths, St. Joe Co. health dept. urges getting flu shot

Posted:

St. Joseph County Health Officer Dr. Thomas A. Felger is encouraging all residents who have not yet received their annual flu shot to do so very soon. There have been six influenza-associated deaths reported in St. Joseph County since December 24, 2013, with the average age of those deaths being 46 years old.  The average age of persons being diagnosed with influenza in St. Joseph County is 35 years old.  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have announced that the H1N1 flu virus, the predominate flu strain that is currently circulating, is causing severe respiratory illness in young and middle-aged adults. This year's flu vaccine DOES cover this strain of H1N1.

Influenza (flu) is a viral disease that can be prevented with a flu shot. The CDC strongly recommends that everyone over 6 months of age be immunized every year for the flu. Flu shots are available at physician offices, most pharmacies and the Health Department's two clinics. No appointment is needed if visiting one of the Health Department's locations. If receiving your shot at the Health Department, cost is $25 cash, credit card, or is free with Medicare Part B.

Symptoms of flu include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuff nose, muscle and/or body aches and fatigue.  Most people infected with the flu will recover within two weeks; however, each year several thousand individuals die from the illness. Having the flu not only makes you feel lousy, but most people miss work or school and struggle with other daily activities.
