Elkhart schools will be making up snow days from polar vortex

Elkhart Community Schools announced they will not be applying for an exemption on snow days from January 5, 6, and 7.  The state board of education allowed schools to request the waver, letting them cut those snow days from their calendar instead of making them.

"Elkhart Community Schools appreciates the consideration by Indiana State Superintendent Glenda Ritz to help our schools maintain adherence to a set calendar by offering to approve applications for waiving the snow days in January," said Dr. Robert Haworth, Superintendent of Elkhart Community Schools. "However, we feel that the most important part of our calendar is providing students with 180 days of instruction. We consider the possibility of weather cancellations when we create our schedule because we know that in northern Indiana, weather can sometimes be treacherous. We understand that our district's families use the school calendar to plan special events and family vacations, so it is important that we do everything possible to conclude the school year on time, while still providing 180 days of instruction."

Elkhart schools will use all three of their scheduled make-up days for the year.  That means they will have classes on March 24, Arpil 18, and May 9.
