Purdue shooting suspect had ties to Michiana

Posted:

The suspect in the shooting at Purdue University will have his first court appearance Thursday. Now, we're learning more about his background. We've confirmed Cody Cousins graduated from Springboro High School in Ohio in 2008. But he also has an address listed in Warsaw.

I stopped at the address for Cody Cousins in Warsaw. I knocked on the door to see if anyone was home. A gentleman answered, said he wouldn't speak, slammed the door and locked it. I did; however, talk with neighbor Renee Contreras. She said she didn't know the people living in the house very well. " They don't socialize with the neighborhood whatsoever. I mean, they walk around the neighborhood and that's about it," she said. Contreras has lived in her home for eight years, and said she remembers new neighbors moving into the home almost two years ago. "Our neighbors, we get along well with. But like them, they moved in here, and I still think hardly anybody knows them," said Contreras.

Cousins roots in Warsaw don't seem to run that deep, though. In fact he didn't go to high school in Michiana. Instead, he graduated from Springboro high school in Ohio. His former neighbors are shocked he's accused of Tuesday's shooting.  Karen Natal lived across the street from the Cousins before they moved to Warsaw. She said, "I knew him to be an intelligent person. He had a great interest in computers. Fixed one of ours as a matter of fact. Sending prayers their way that they might find some resolution to this."

Renee Contreras is praying for everyone involved, too. She can't imagine what Cousins' family is going through. She said, "people can raise their kids the best way that they can, doesn't mean they're going to turn out the best."

High School Students Make World War II Documentary
