UPDATE: Winter weather leading to multiple accidents

White out conditions from blowing snow and icy roads have caused multiple accidents throughout the area.  Lanes closures are in place along several major roads in Michiana.

Southbound traffic on the US-20 Bypass was closed for two hours in the afternoon between US-20 and SR-2 due to multiple accidents and slide-offs in the area.

I-94 experienced multiple closures in different areas throughout the day on Thursday.  Berrien County police urged drivers to stay off the roads if they don't have to travel.

The Indiana Toll Road is also dealing with winds, frigid temperatures and blowing snow. They say the worst of the weather is between the LaPorte and Middlebury exits. Toll Road crews are working to plow the road and put down a mixture of liquid beet juice, salt and sand. The mixture is used because regular road salt isn't effective at temperatures below 20.

US-31 was restricted near Roosevelt for several hours after two cars and a semi-truck were involved in a crash.

The intersection of State Road 23 & Elm was blocked after an accident Thursday morning in Granger. The crash involved two vehicles, which collided in the intersection at approximately 10:30 a.m. Injuries are suspected, according to St. Joseph County police.  The road reopened Thursday afternoon to traffic.

South Bend Police also say they're working dozens of accidents due to the weather conditions. Officers are also said to be closing some streets.
